The angels of Luke 2:2-5 bring the shepherds a message … good tidings of great Joy! And it wasn’t just to them or to Israel but a message for all people. A baby was being born who would become the Savior of the world… the Christ or Messiah. He gives them a sign that the baby who was born would be found wrapped in swaddling clothes and laying in a manger. It probably brought to mind for those shepherds the prophecy of Micah 5:2-5… of one who would be born in Bethlehem and would rise up and become a shepherd of His flock. This shepherd would be our peace. In my painting I wanted to connect the newly born lamb to the event of Christ birth. I tried to visualize that moment when the shepherds realized the prophecy was being fulfilled in his hearing and that he was a witness to the arrival of the Great Shepherd… the sacrificial lamb… the Savior… the Prince of Peace.
